spring 2016 eyewear fashion

At Zenni, we’ve been watching the Fall/Winter 2016 runway shows, following all your favorite fashion designers, and keeping tabs on celebrity street style to see what trends are going to be hits this spring. After all, stylish accessories are what we do best. Here’s our definitive guide to the looks you’ll want to be wearing this year.

For Women

Shield your eyes in style with oversized angular frames, glamorous upswept silhouettes, and the most noteworthy trend this year — rounded shades with an eye-catching mirrored lens.

Chic Square

Reminiscent of screen sirens from the golden era, oversized square sunglasses accentuate retro glamour. And nothing says old Hollywood like a pair of these frames to showcase your sleek sense of style. For spring, brighten up a bit with square acetate sunnies in a smokey gray shade. We’ve seen this color on the runways at the Paris Haute Couture shows and can’t get enough. Kate Bosworth, Gigi Hadid, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley make an airport run look extra chic with their vintage-glam angular shades.

TRY: Go big or go home with bold, square-shaped frames in a gorgeous shade of gray.

Stylish Circular

One of the hottest trends of the season, round frames are updated with a metal bridge and mirrored lens for spring. The contrast between a retro tortoiseshell finish and a pop of color make this look a total style sensation. It’s no wonder we’ve seen this style on trend setters like Kate Hudson, Gigi Hadid, Alessandra Ambrosio, Karlie Kloss, Olivia Palermo, and Kendall Jenner — just to name a few.

Expect to see shades in a variety of mixed materials including animal prints, marble finishes, and tortoiseshells. Mirrored lenses in every color imaginable will be seen come spring and summer. Better get your hands on a pair for Coachella now. You heard it here first!

TRY: Classic tortoiseshell frames make a stunning statement, while gold mirrored lenses reflect light on these modern, eye-catching sunglasses.

Sophisticated Cat-Eye

Cat-eye frames and fashion go hand-in-hand. They’re the equivalent of a little black dress — classic, timeless, and they’ll never go out of style. 2016 is all about the modernized cat-eye. Angular silhouettes, jeweled adornments, and larger-than-life frames breathe new life into this perennial fashion fave.

We’ve been lusting over a pair of Zenni’s full-coverage cat-eye frames for their signature super-glam appeal. It’s no wonder Miranda Kerr, Olivia Palermo, and Taylor Swift love this polished look. Check out their savvy street style — if only we could look this good while strolling the streets!

TRY: An elegant oversized tortoiseshell frame complimented by a warm brown gradient lens.

OR: For a super-chic look, a dark tortoiseshell frame with an upswept silhouette and metal temple detailing will do the trick.

For Men

This season: round aviators get a modern makeover, contrast browlines add sophistication, and acetate aviator frames bring about a seventies retro flair.

Round Brow Bar Aviators

It’s all in the structured details for men. A double-metal bridge line adds an interesting architectural element to the classic round aviator shape made popular last season while overlapping lenses add depth to your look. Josh Hartnett, Justin Bieber, and Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington up the bar with their round aviator shades.

TRY: Wire-rimmed aviator shades accented with a thin metal double brow bar.

Iconic Browlines

Elegant finishes like marble, tortoiseshell, and rich brown browlines elevate the retro, streamlined silhouette you’ve come to know and love. Our favorite dapper gents Robert Pattinson, David Beckham, and Ryan Gosling demonstrate how to wear this classic style both casually and dressed up.

TRY: Mixed material browline frames with a rich brown finish accented by a metal bridge and yellow arms.

Modern Aviators

Sporty and sleek, seventies-style aviators are in for spring — think full-rimmed acetate frames and refined metal styles. Authentically vintage yet totally new, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, and Chris Hemsworth exemplify this look with confidence and ease.

Color Forecast

From bold blues, sunny yellows, and olive greens to rich whiskey browns and dusky neutrals — it’s all about saturated color this year. Add an easy update to your wardrobe with our seven must-have hues for the season.

Bright Whites

We’ve seen white all over the runways during fashion week. And we’re not the only ones who’ve taken note. Your favorite celebs have taken to the trend, wearing shades in a variety of shapes yet keeping their frames color neutral. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Zenni has released their retro-inspired heart-shaped frames that leave us longing for summer days ahead.

In keeping with the trend, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Lana Del Rey have all sported white heart-shaped frames. This style isn’t just for pop stars either; check out Shameless star Emmy Rossum, former Glee actress Dianna Agron, and Madonna rocking their super sweet Lolita-inspired silhouettes.

TRY: Show some flare in bright white heart-shaped sunnies.

Sunshine Yellows

Yellow isn’t solely for the eternally optimistic. Opt for a yellow mirrored finish as a subtle way to introduce this look, or if you’re feeling bold, a translucent yellow frame will add a sunny disposition to your ensemble. Take note, trendsetters: this one is here to stay. We just spotted yellow-tinted lenses at the Prada F/W 2016 Menswear show in Milan. Emma Roberts, Drew Barrymore, and Gwen Stefani display how to easily work this color trend into your own casual street style.

Bold Blues

Bold blues continue to make a statement all over the high fashion runways, with cobalt as the standout shade of the season. At Versace’s recent 2016 Haute Couture show in Paris, model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stole the show in a bright blue ensemble. Hollywood screen sirens Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, and Salma Hayek love their blue shades and so do we!

TRY: The brighter the better! We like these oversized square glasses in a saturated shade of deep blue for maximum coverage.

Blue Acetate Wayfarers

Men look fantastic in blue, too. Robert Downey Jr., Bradley Cooper, and Leonardo DiCaprio show off their arctic-inspired shiny shades.

TRY: For a bold yet refined look, go for a retro shape with stunning cobalt contrast browline and blue reflective mirrored lens.

Olive Greens

Inspired by the hue of traditional military attire, olive greens are naturally complementary to a variety of outfits and skin tones. Expect to see this utilitarian tone factoring heavily in accessories this year, from handbags and shoes to sunglasses and outerwear. Up the ante by colorblocking your sunnies; an olive green frame paired with a blue mirrored finish has never looked so good. Hilary Duff, Eva Mendes, and Poppy Delevigne make green look glam, pairing their glasses with bright, colorful outfits.

TRY: Translucent, round acetate sunglasses in a gorgeous green finish.

Whiskey Browns

Opulent, rich, and filled with saturated color, whiskey brown hues are reminiscent of a fine Kentucky bourbon. This color compliments almost everything in your wardrobe — a perfect choice for work and happy hour cocktails. Fashion insider tip: whiskey brown sunglasses pair well with leather accessories such as a tan tote, an aged belt, or that cognac-colored bag you’ve been eyeing. Sandra Bullock, Gwen Stefani, and Chrissy Teigen make brown look anything but bland.

Plenty of stylish guys have picked up on this color trend. Liam Hemsworth, Tom Brady, and Bradley Cooper shield their eyes with their signature whiskey brown shades.

Dusky Neutrals

Think soft, muted, and notably toned down. Neutral colors offer a sophisticated alternative to the brighter color trends we’ve seen so far. From sandy browns to warm ambers, dusky hues are sure to be one of the season’s hottest trends. These cool colors are a hit with A-list actresses Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon, and Jennifer Lawrence.

TRY: Honey-hued square frames with a gradient lens achieve a subtle sense of sophistication.

Sugary Pinks

We knew pink was going to be huge this season when we saw it all over the runways at New York Fashion Week last September. At Carolina Herrera’s and Diane Von Furstenberg’s S/S 16 shows, models matched their ethereal dusty rose dresses with circular pink frames. This year the trend carries over with candy-colored hues prominently on display at the Michael Kors and Versace pre-fall collections. After all, a hint of pink makes for the perfect accessory. Celebs who’ve embraced this look include Jessica Alba, Rihanna, and Alexa Chung. What better way to accentuate your eyes than a pair of geometric cat-eye shades?

TRY: Partial-rimmed circular frames in a stunning shade of bubblegum pink — one of our favorite picks for spring!

OR: The definition of statement sunnies — a translucent square frame with an optional rose-tinted lens. They’re fun, flirty, and eye-catching.
