Craving new frames? Me too! Effectively shopping for specs and sunnies starts with identifying your unique fashion sense—plus, you want to make sure you pick a pair, or pairs (feel free to start a collection!), that fits with your lifestyle. Once you’ve got that piece figured out, a little pre-shopping prep will work wonders in ensuring you make the most out of every minute of your trip and end up with the most fantastic eyewear for fall. Get even more details and take a look at my exclusive video “Shopping for Eyewear 101” below.

If your style is polished and professional

Take inventory of your favorite go-to office accessories—even snapping a photo of them on your phone before you hit the store could be helpful. Does your everyday bag have gold hardware embellishments? If so, maybe you can find a pair of frames with complementary metallic accents. Do you regularly reach for navy pumps? Glasses featuring a twist on traditional tortoiseshell with unexpected pops of blue could be the perfect finishing touch.

Jenn suggests: Tortoise glasses from Sperry Top-Sider with color-blocked temples, as well as amber shades from TOMS flaunting a glossy finish, give way to a refined yet trendy look. Definitely consider having specialized lenses with an anti-reflective treatment to reduce glare and/or a coating to filter out blue or high-energy visible light to combat the strain that looking at a digital device for hours on end puts on your eyes. Such lenses can be put into all kinds of frames, so the possibilities are endless!

If you consider yourself a fashion fanatic

Take advantage of those giant fall fashion issues and tear out the looks you love from your must-have magazines—or if you’re feeling web savvy, start a Pinterest board featuring your favorite bloggers! This will help you focus on the wardrobe pieces you’re coveting most for the season ahead, and you can shop accordingly.

Jenn suggests: Don’t be afraid to be bold and play with what’s trending in the style realm! Valentino sunnies with a fun camo print and stud detailing, Sperry Top-Sider sunglasses with bright blue flash lenses and pastel blue Derek Lam specs with a crystal finish are all great fashion-forward options.

If you are best described as stylishly sporty

Pay careful attention to what you need from your frames—both in terms of functionality and fashion—in the days leading up to your shopping trip. When you are out running, do you feel like your current pair is moving around a tad too much? Would your performance benefit from more protection from the sun by opting for something slightly larger? Make a wish list of five features (one of them can be to perfectly match your snazzy new sneaks—no judgments here!) and bring it with you to the store.

Jenn suggests: Brightly colored matte sunnies and classic aviators from Smith Optics, not to mention pink TOMS frames with flirty edge, perfectly combine style with performance.

Maybe you are a girl who always goes all-out glam

The right pair of alluring frames can elevate every single outfit in your closet—so my suggestion is to outfit yourself in your most basic of basics (think jeans and a white tee) when you go out shopping. This way, you can rest assured that the pair your purchase will not only work with your beloved little cocktail dress, but also give you that touch of glamour you most surely crave on a daily basis!

Jenn suggests: Channel your inner glitz with TURA Inc. cat-eyes flaunting rhinestone-encrusted temples or oversized sunglasses from Carlos by Carlos Santana with a shimmering metallic effect.
